Day one : (all inclusive)
Passage on the MV Lady Rose passenger freighter from Port Alberni down the Alberni Inlet to Bamfield.
Arrival pick up and transportation to West Coast Magic Bed and Breakfast.
Day two: (all inclusive)
The Big Day Westcoast Adventure will give you a full day experience within the oceanic grandeur of Barkley Sound.
We depart mid-morning from Bamfield harbour and cruise gently along the South shore of Barkley Sound. Along the way, we will pass Bamfield’s stunning Brady’s Beach and sea stacks; our famous “blow hole”; Kiixan – once the fortress village site of the local Huu-ay-aht First Nation, best known as ‘Execution Rock”; a number of isolated beaches, including Topaltos, where local surfers “anchor off” with their boats and go surfing when big swells roll in from the west; and a seal colony where we will watch the seals play in the waves and surf that break on the rocky shores. Afterward, we head across Trevor Channel to follow the shores of Edward King Island.
At any time on this daylong journey, if fortune smiles on us, we may see bears, mink, eagles, a host of seabirds, even whales. As your host, I will entertain you with history, stories and legends about the area. Depending on how calm the sea is, we will go in close to some of the numerous caves that can be seen along the shoreline. Right from the outset, if you like to fish, we can slow to trolling speed and try for salmon or, at times, stop and drift over some spots where bottom fishing can be fun. Midday, we anchor and go ashore on one of the islands for lunch.
Bring all the treats and comfort food you love, or if you prefer, I can order a locally prepared lunch for you. Following our leisurely picnic, you will participate in preparing a Native style pit-cook and open-fire salmon roast. Once the food is cooking, there will be about 3 hours for aimless interpretive shoreline wandering to look at tide pools, seaweeds and plants where the accent of my dialogue will be on traditional and contemporary use of these items for technology, food and medicine. When the food is ready, we will open the pit and feast on uniquely flavored vegetables and the matchless taste of fire-roasted salmon exclusive to this traditional cooking method. Relax in the warm evening sun and then, just before sunset, we cruise onward, eventually stopping at Wizard Rocks where another seal colony resides. From this vantage point, watch the seals frolic while the sun sinks behind the mountains northwest of Barkley sound. As the sky deepens to red then magenta and ever darker shades of purple, we return across Trevor Channel, home to Bamfield.
Day three: (all inclusive)
Transport to departure dock.
Passage on the MV Lady Rose passenger freighter from Bamfield up the Alberni Inlet to Port Alberni.
